Myth Busting: The Car Makes That Get Ticketed The Most

Research analyzed for the insurance industry looked into the number of tickets different car makes received for one year on U.S. roadways per 100,000 miles driven. This enabled results for the type of vehicles that had the highest ticket numbers. Our article will provide answers to bust myths around the car makes that are pulled over most by the number of tickets received.

Here’s the top 10 cars from Forbes and Insure.com:

  1. Mercedes-Benz SL-class
  2. Toyota Camry Solara
  3. Scion TC
  4. Hummer H2/H3
  5. Scion XB
  6. Mercedes-Benz CLS-63 AMG
  7. Acura Integra
  8. Pontiac Grand Prix
  9. Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG
  10. Volkswagen GTI

When analyzing the data, it turns out the #1 car, which is a convertible, is up to 4 times more likely than any other car on the road to be issued a ticket. The #2 car, a coupe, is 3.5 times as likely to be ticketed by an officer’s stop, while #3 was 3.4 times compared to an average car on the road. With #4 and 5 moving away from the top at 2.9 and 2.7 times as likely to be ticketed.

What’s Sex Got To Do With It?

Well, apparently everything…while the running myth is that more young men get ticketed that women, the reverse was actually true. Of the top ticketed cars, it was middle-aged women that were driving and being ticketed. For the #1 car, the average age of the drivers is 53, with men being 41% and women 60% who drive this type of vehicle. The #2 car is also driven by 62% women and 38% men with an average age of 50.

However, things start to shift when we get to #3 and 4 with a younger average age of 30 but similar numbers of women drivers at 61% versus 31% for the men. Now when it comes to the Hummer, its men leading the way at 73% with only 28% of the drivers being female. In a Hummer, the average age of the driver is 46.
